GABRIELLA CILMI | Sweet About Me

LYRICS:

Ooh watching me
Hanging by a string this time
Oh, easily the climax of a perfect life
Ooh watching me
Hanging by a string this time
Oh easily, my smile's worth a hundred lies

If there's lessons to be learned
I'd rather get my jamming words in first oh
Tell you something that I've found
That the world's a better place
When it's upside down boy
If there's lessons to be learned
I'd rather get my jamming words in first oh
When you're playing with desire
Don't come running to my place
When it burns like fire, boy

Sweet about me
Nothing sweet about me, yeah
Sweet about me
Nothing sweet about me, yeah

Blue, blue, blue waves they crash
As time goes by, so hard to catch
And too, too smooth, ain't all that
Why don't you ride my side of the tracks

If there's lessons to be learned
I'd rather get my jamming words in first oh
Tell you something that I've found
That the world's a better place
When it's upside down boy
If there's lessons to be learned
I'd rather get my jamming words in first oh
When you're playing with desire
Don't come running to my place
When it burns like fire, boy

Sweet about me
Nothing sweet about me, yeah
Sweet about me
Nothing sweet about me, yeah

x "Sweet About Me" was Gabriella Cilmi's first single. It reached the #1 spot in the Australian ARIA Singles Chart, making her the youngest ever solo artist to achieve the top spot in ARIA history.

x Gabriella has said in an interview that the vintage sound of "Sweet About Me" was inspired by a trip to Paris, where Brian Higgins, Miranda Cooper and Gabriella scoured second-hand record shops for French soundtracks from the '50s and obscure psychedelic albums.

REVIEWS:
x "Sweet By Me" (...) opts on the Winehouse approach, utilizing the dreamy melodies of eons old and attaching it to it the self-aware diva sauciness of modern day. Listening to her cigarette smoke and whiskey shots-coated pipes curve around the song's sly lyrics ("There's nothing sweet about me", the hook devilishly sneers), it seems impossible that such a performance could be coming out of a teenager; she sounds at least twice her age.
Even more amazing is that it's moody, cinnamon-hued twang was produced by none other than UK production house Xenomania. Hailed for the buzzy dance-pop beats behind overseas girl group phenoms Girls Aloud and Sugababes, this rested breezer continues Xeno's refusal to be pinned down musically, pulling off an organic warmth celebrated soul-sampler Mark Ronson tends to lack in his at-times suffocating patchwork. David Allun Jones

x With a lethargic beat and soul inspired instrumental, the vocals on Gabriella Cilmi's debut single Sweet about me are left to flourish of their own accord.
(...) [She's] set to be one of the emerging talents of 2008 - the track's soulful allusions and strong solo female vocal follows in the footsteps of the likes of Amy Winehouse and Duffy, a direction that the music industry seems to be leaning towards if their success is anything to go by. Jess Collings

x Gabriella's voice is a wonderful mix of sugar-sweet pop and fiery jazz and blues. Whilst the song itself is a little repetitive (I have, after 3 minutes, received the message loud and clear that Gabriella is not sweet) it's a welcome change to hear real instruments on a pop track for once. A lovely summery pop song with a jagged edge. Catriona Boyle

x The lyrics don't make a heap of sense, but the chorus is nice and hooky, the beat rumbles along, lovely sort of fiddly noise pops in at a few points... I'm really tempted to compare it to Imani Coppola. Or Morcheeba. I realise that this is not the most enticing of comparisons, no, but it does sound lovely. She has a certain sparkiness in her voice, a kind of gleam in the eye that's rather appealing. William B. Swygart

x The tune is now commercial radio fodder, an earworm if there ever was one. It's undeniably catchy, but I fear it's one of those songs that may grate on you the more you hear it. The chorus has a smooth, buttery vocal melody, where the song really opens up, but the verses meander along with a Ronettes-style shuffle that feels withdrawn and hesitant. Dom Alessio

x 'Sweet About Me' is a sassy and assured assault on the charts by the Aussie teenager - a mere 16 years of age - that sees her Macy Gray-like rasp sashay on top of Xenomania's expert pop production. Forget any easy comparisons and embrace your new favourite singer. She'll be in the charts for a long time yet. Keeley

x (...) a typically smart Xenomania confection: authentic and retro-sounding, but, thanks to some subtle electro flourishes, fresh and contemporary too. Its melodic cuteness notwithstanding, Cilmi's lyrics are surprisingly bitter: "When you're playing with desire, don't come running to my place when it burns like fire boy," she spits. Most impressive of all is Cilmi's voice, which manages to be sweet and coarse all at the same time, much like a drizzling of honey on a slice of toast. Nick Levine

x Australian number one single Sweet About Me marries the usual Xenomania calling cards - multiple catchy choruses and fantastic, gibberish lyrics - to a shuffling groove that's half a world away from their usual productions for the likes of Girls Aloud or Sugababes. Nick Bond
