KYLIE MINOGUE | Made Of Glass

LYRICS:

It wasn't always like this
It wasn't always so
We did it in the darkness
We did it in the cold

Caught in a fairly extraordinary world
It's emotional
Where talking is rarely that necessary
And time doesn't count at all

Bohemian boys and Brazilian girls
A familiar noise in a familiar world
It's like a million beats in a Parisian heart
(They're made of glass)
From the boy in the west
To the girl in the the east
They'll be working a sweat
In the name of the beast
Where rebellion stops and oblivion starts
(They're made of glass)

Love makes the world go round
I hold it in my hand
But it slips away
(And I watch it fade)
Love is a mystery
I hear it talk to me
But the words are strange
(Like it knows my name)

It wasn't always easy
It wasn't always fun
We intertwine naively
But in the end we're one

Caught in a fairly extraordinary world
It's emotional
Where talking is rarely that necessary
And time doesn't count at all

Love makes the world go round
I hold it in my hand
But it slips away
(And I watch it fade)
Love is a mystery
I hear it talk to me
But the words are strange
(Like it knows my name)

Bohemian boys and Brazilian girls
A familiar noise in a familiar world
It's like a million beats in a Parisian heart
(They're made of glass)
From the boy in the west
To the girl in the the east
They'll be working a sweat
In the name of the beast
Where rebellion stops and oblivion starts
(They're made of glass)

REVIEWS:
x (...) there's something utterly enticing about it, and (even rarer, this) a sense of mystery too. Kylie breathes it like she's telling us something that she felt in a dream. The song - it's short, under three minutes - turns on a whispered half-rap, "bohemian boys and Brazilian girls...", flashing past like an overheard secret. If? When? Why? What?
The music too has that slightly cryptic quality you get with the best motorik, like you could listen to it all day and still not...quite... - not surprising as it sounds like a New Order track (it's mostly the lovely bassline) and New Order have always been good at teasing and intriguing. Three New Order singles are on their way to the shops right now, and the one with "New Order" on the disc is easily the worst. "Made Of Glass" is New Order if they, well, if they were called Xenomania and wrote songs for Kylie. Sorry, not all comparisons are helpful. I love this record. Tom Ewing

x After producing Kylie's worst ever single ("Giving You Up"), Xenomania redeemed themselves somewhat by coming up with this spectacular B-side. "Made Of Glass" is everything that "Giving You Up" wasn't - fresh, original and edgy. The largely nonsensical lyrics are undeniably pretty, while the spoken word verses counterbalance the subtle but effective chorus. From memory, this was only leaked when Rachel Stevens expressed interest in butchering it. Sneaky! "Made Of Glass" was actually released as a double A-side in Australia and this received the majority of radio airplay, becoming a top 10 hit. Pop Trash Addicts

x You have to wonder how long this one's been sitting in the Xenomania vaults, seeing as that it's much more reminiscent of Brian Higgins' early work with Chicane and Cher rather than their more recent barnstormers. "Made Of Glass" sticks to a proven formula closely, melding Kylie's whispery vocals with expansive, winding synths, subdued cymbal rushes, and a hint of guitar, all while a gentle club beat keeps everything afloat. It's very pretty to say the least and a step up from "Giving You Up" and the overrated "I Believe In You". The only problem I have with the song is with Kylie herself. I'm not convinced that her precious, wide-eyed vocal approach is the right one. I think this song is just begging for a little more stylish pizzaz. Word has already spread that "Made Of Glass" has been given to Rachel Stevens and that this current version will probably never see the light of day as an official release. Rachel isn't necessarily a better singer than Kylie (neither of them are exceptional), but her voice is certainly a bit warmer and more expressive. Shane
