REVIEWS: x Higgins. Cooper. Cowling. Powell. Coler. Buchanan. Buena. Range. Pflueger. Stecher. Hofmann. Spadavecchiaand. These are the twelve people who wrote "Round Round". This is twice as many people as wrote "Freak Like Me", and since "Round Round" is only half as good pop maths suggests that the committee method has perhaps gone too far. On the other hand there's one part of "Round Round" where an entirely different song drops in, as if by accident, and it works pretty well - so maybe if it had been twelve different songs we'd have seen some action. (...) It's also the most straightforwardly pop thing the Sugababes have ever released - none of the introversion of "Overload" or "Soul Sound", none of the mutedness, none of the dirty fizz of "Freak Like Me". A really strong, glossy chorus; some reasonable verses; that's all. It could almost be Atomic Kitten, or Hear'Say. Tom Ewing x It took 12 people to write (...) Round Round: that isn't songwriting so much as throwing ideas at the wall in the hope one of them will stick. On Round Round, at least, something does: the nagging chorus is undeniably catchy. Alexis Petridis x “Round Round,” their deserved second number one, with a rhythm/string sample angular intro which again calls Cabaret Voltaire to mind, before going straight into what they used to call a classic pop hook, superficially lively yet sung very solemnly against a nagging compressed grunge guitar line and purposeful percussion (Bananarama meets the Velvets) which becomes sinister by the ease in which “love” is being rejected in this song – “I don’t need no man/Get my kicks for free.” There is no exultation at liberation here; it’s a chant being used as self-defence against inflicted pain. Note how it slows down to the classic 6/8 soul ballad form in the middle eight, as the vocal meaningfully pronounces the question “Does it hurt when you see how I’ve done without you?” There is no smirk in her voice when she sings this, implying that she needs to know herself how she’s done without you. The very title is of course the seed of doubt – “round and round and round and round…” – one routine replaced by another. As with all great pop, this works on innumerable levels. Marcello Carlin x With the blinding 'Freak Like Me', Sugababes simultaneously resurrected a flagging career, brought the bootlegging scene overground, and provided fresh testimony to Gary Numan's towering genius. This follow-up again draws inspiration from early-80s robo-pop, its hypnotic chorus bearing a sneaky resemblance to Dead Or Alive's classic 'You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)'. Elsewhere Keisha, Mutya and new kid Heidi perfect their trademark if-we-could-be-arsed drawl, which may lack the innovative sparkle of 'Freak Like Me', but 'Round Round' seems certain to propel Sugababes back to the chart's summit, and provide plenty of opportunities for them to step through their dead-eyed, disinterested routine on 'TOTP'.
